GREECE. More details have emerged about Hellenic Duty Free Shops’ first half results, released earlier this week. Hellenic said that sales (-8.9%) had not kept pace with passenger growth (+1.1%), falling particularly sharply in April (volcano cloud) and June. Confectionery, up +4.0%, resisted the negative trend.

UK. BAA today launched the Heathrow Travel Product Awards for 2010, which will recognise "the best travel accessories and gadgets" on offer at the airport. The awards will be decided by the British public, who are being encouraged to vote online for their favourite items. This year, 12 categories are being put to the public vote, including Travel Must-Have, Best Handbag, Top Travel Read and Best Travel Entertainment.

SINGAPORE. Yam Seng Pte Ltd has been awarded the exclusive global distribution rights, including travel retail, to the Murray Webb Collection of rugby-related merchandise. Widely considered to be one of the world's finest practising caricaturists, Murray Webb's work usually revolves around sports icons, and this collection will focus initially on leading international and All Blacks rugby players in the run-up to the Rugby World Cup in September 2011.

CANADA. Vancouver International Airport has hailed the success of its recent ‘Take off Fridays’ summer promotion which saw concessions sales per passenger “drastically increase”. The retail and community promotion, which drew its inspiration from activity during the 2010 Olympic Games at YVR, received positive feedback from both the community and business partners, said the airport.

Delhi Duty Free Services, a three-way partnership between two of the industry’s leading retailers and Delhi International Airport Limited, has opened over 30,000sq ft of duty free shopping space at Indira Gandhi International Airport’s new Terminal 3 in Delhi. “Operating at T3, the sixth-largest terminal in the world with a 34 million passenger handling capacity, we expect huge footfall and see enormous scope for the growth of airport retailing in India," says Delhi Duty Free Services CEO Nicholas Goddard Palmer.

DENMARK. A Danish inventor is offering travel retailers a new multi-functional travel gadget that has already gained a listing onboard a major European flag carrier. The Cavius Personal Alarm is a four-in-one device that can be used as a personal attack alarm, a smoke detector, and a door and luggage alarm. Activated by a simple button, it emits a loud noise as a deterrent.

SWITZERLAND. Travel Retail Experts has launched a limited edition ‘WWF Collect and Protect’ collection of plush toys featuring six of the most endangered species in the world: the jaguar, orangutan, panda, polar bear, tiger and the marine turtle. A percentage of the proceeds from each sale goes direct to the World Wildlife Fund to help preserve species that are in danger of extinction.

UAE. Duty free retail turnover at Abu Dhabi International Airport grew by +19% year-on-year during the first half of 2010 to US$75 million. This figure was driven by an impressive +7.2% rise in per-passenger spend to US$14.47. Abu Dhabi Airports Company Chief Commercial Officer Huraiz Almur bin Huraiz says: “Retail spending at our airport is significantly stronger than passenger growth (+11.7%), a clear sign that we are succeeding in encouraging travellers to spend more."

UK. Russ Berrie is extending its Shelby Turtle Lil Peepers range with the addition of a Pirate collection, along with a special Baby selection. Shelby, along with Shecky and Squirtle, are now offered in a range of Pirate costumes complete with eye patches and striped caps featuring skull and crossbones motifs. They are available from early August in small and medium sizes.

FRANCE. Leading French travel retailer Aelia has begun the roll-out of its new retail identity, Aelia Duty Free, to its latest stores at Bordeaux Mérignac and Lille Lesquin airports. The company’s updated retail brand, complete with new-look fascia, was first introduced across Aelia's stores at Nice Côte d'Azur Airport in May.

Fresh from a recession-busting record year in 2009, Dubai Duty Free today announced a +16% rise in first-half sales to US$607million. “We have seen an increase in consumer spending across all categories, with average spend per departing passenger at US$47,” says Dubai Duty Free Managing Director Colm McLoughlin.

CHINA. Tomorrow, 3 July, is an auspicious occasion as the new 96,000sq m international terminal opens at Hangzhou Xiaoshan International Airport. The commercial offer includes two highly ambitious and upscale retail stores run by China Duty Free Group (CDFG) set in the international and domestic lounges. CDFG President Lu Lu described the company’s partnership with the airport as “a great milestone”.

UK. Following the completion by BAA of its new security area at Edinburgh Airport, WDF has officially launched its World Duty Free store. The 6,942sq ft shop is the centrepiece of the newly designed airport facilities and has been re-located to sit immediately opposite the entrance into the Departures lounge. A first for World Duty Free, it also features a new-look World of Whiskies store.
