International passenger traffic leaps by double digits at ASUR airports

MEXICO. Leading airport group ASUR (Grupo Aeroportuario del Sureste) has posted a +8.9% rise in passenger traffic year-on-year in August, to 1.43 million. Crucially from a travel retail viewpoint, international traffic leapt by +15.1% in the month, with a strong contribution from the key gateway of Cancún International Airport.

Not only has this year’s event broken the previous attendance record, but sales are rebounding to pre-crisis levels in many sectors of Latin American travel retail. International tourist arrivals grow +7% in first-half 2010

INTERNATIONAL. The first six months of 2010 saw international tourist arrivals grow by +7%, according to the August Interim Update of the UNWTO World Tourism Barometer. This result confirms the recovery trend which began in the last quarter of 2009, and is expected to continue in the second half of the year at a somewhat more moderate rate.

INTERNATIONAL. Passenger traffic at the world’s airports continued to rebound in July, according to the latest figures from Airports Council International (ACI). International passenger numbers surged by +9.5% year-on-year, with total traffic growing by +6.9%, a slower rate than in previous months. Asia Pacific and Latin America-Caribbean each posted impressive growth of +14% in the month.

INTERNATIONAL. International passenger demand surged by +9.2% year-on-year in July (measured in Revenue Passenger Kilometres), according to the latest figures from the International Air Transport Association (IATA). Crucially, July global passenger traffic was +3% higher than the pre-crisis levels of early 2008. IATA chief Giovanni Bisignani says: “Improving demand is an important component of the recovery. But it must translate to the bottom line."

Salvatore Ferragamo strengthens Latin American presence

LATIN AMERICA. Salvatore Ferragamo has expanded its commercial presence in Latin America over the summer with three new store openings: a flagship store in Mexico City and two stores in Costa Rica and the Dominican Republic. For the first time in Latin America, the two-storey flagship store will feature the limited edition Ferragamo’s Creations collection, which comprises reproductions of the historic shoes designed by Salvatore Ferragamo between the 1920s and the 1960s.

Women in Travel to be launched in Latin America

Federica Tojo and Lois Pasternak will host a breakfast meeting on 2 September at the Caribe Hilton in San Juan. Funds raised from a raffle will be donated to charities helping children injured in the Chilean earthquake.

Dufry plots ambitious expansion in 2010

INTERNATIONAL. Dufry Group plans to open close to 20,000sq m of new retail space in 2010, covering 152 stores, CEO Julián Díaz told analysts after Thursday’s half-year results announcement. More than half of the stores will open in Q3 and Q4, with a strong contribution from Dufry’s Hudson acquisition. Díaz also reiterated the retailer’s desire to expand in emerging markets, with Russia, China and India of particular interest.

MAp Airports sells stake in Mexican group ASUR

MEXICO. MAp Airports has sold its 16% stake in Mexican airports group Grupo Aeroportuario del Sureste (ASUR) for US$207 million following a public offering. MAp said it found it would not be able to bring its airport management model to bear on the business, and decided to exit its stake.

Caribbean ARI launches biggest-ever promotion in Barbados

BARBADOS. Caribbean ARI (CARI), a key travel retail concessionaire at Barbados Grantley Adams International Airport, has launched its biggest-ever promotion for passengers around the Kadooment (Carnival) season. The ‘CARI Me Back to Barbados’ campaign runs at each of the company’s four stores, and is giving the retailer wide exposure through a partnership with broadcaster CBC.

ASUR posts +29.8% international traffic gain amid Mexicana woes

MEXICO. Grupo Aeroportuario del Sureste (ASUR) has posted a +16.2% year-on-year rise in total passenger traffic for July 2010. International traffic surged by +29.8% over a difficult preceding year, driven by major airport and tourism gateway Cancún which saw a +32.6% rise in international passengers to 808,312. Meanwhile the company has reacted cautiously to the financial woes of Mexicana, which has filed for bankruptcy protection in Mexico and the US.

Heathrow, Paris, Hong Kong lead international passenger rankings

INTERNATIONAL. London Heathrow, Paris Charles de Gaulle and Hong Kong International were the top three airports ranked by international passenger numbers in 2009. That’s according to Airports Council International’s (ACI) World Airport Traffic Report for the year, just released. The top-ranked airport by total passengers numbers was Atlanta (mainly domestic US), while a remarkable 17 of the 25 fastest growing airports were in China.

Retail revenue growth buoys Fraport Group in first half of 2010

GERMANY. Fraport Group’s Retail & Real Estate division posted a solid +4.3% rise in first-half revenue, to €186 million, the company reported today. “Our Frankfurt home base generated net retail revenue per passenger of more than three Euros for the first time despite continuing difficult economic times," said group Chairman Dr Stefan Schulte. Frankfurt Airport’s revenue from shopping hit €41.9 million in the half, from €40.5 million a year ago.

INTERNATIONAL. Passenger traffic at the world’s airports climbed by +8% year-on-year in June, maintaining the strong momentum of recent months, Airports Council International (ACI) has reported. International passenger growth stood at a healthy +10.8% with domestic traffic growing by +6.1%. First-half results also showed robust growth, with overall traffic up by +5.9%.

Autogrill beats disruptions with sound revenue and profits growth

ITALY/INTERNATIONAL. International travel retail-to-catering giant Autogrill today posted a +5.4% increase in first-half consolidated revenues to €2,800.3 million (+4.2% at comparable rates). Consolidated EBITDA reached €265.7 million, +3.5% on the first half of 2009 (+2.3% at comparable rates).

International passenger demand among the world’s airlines climbed by +11.9% year-on-year in June, the International Air Transport Association (IATA) has reported. “There is no indication that the recovery will stall soon,” said IATA CEO Giovanni Bisignani. “But, with government stimulus packages tailing off and restocking largely completed, we expect some slowing over the months ahead.”

Munich Airport operator FMG lands major Oman contract

OMAN. FMG, the operator of Munich Airport, has been awarded a new four-and-a-half year contract for the commissioning, relocation and operation of two airports in the Sultanate of Oman. FMG emerged with the winning bid from a large field of competitors to gain the largest consulting contract in the company's history.

Asia Pacific set to drive global airline traffic growth, says ICAO

Scheduled airline passenger traffic will leap by +6.4% year-on-year in 2010, with Asia Pacific taking a lead role, according to the latest report by the International Civil Aviation Organisation (ICAO). The figures, which are measured in passenger-kilometres performed (PKPs), compare to a decline of -2% in 2009.

Bullish Boeing forecasts strong aircraft demand in next 20 years

Leading aircraft manufacturer Boeing forecasts a US$3.6 trillion market for new commercial aeroplanes over the next 20 years as world economies rebound and demand for new and replacement aircraft spurs growth. Grupo Vierci to launch ambitious duty free venture in Chile
