‘A La Gate Carte’ delivers mobile retail solutions to airports

US. A La Gate Carte has launched a new mobile merchandising solution which, it claims, will help airport retailers generate additional duty free sales and convert passengers into buyers: a motorised mobile retail store that delivers last minute and/or impulse purchasing opportunities to airport travellers.

NEW ZEALAND. Auckland Airport has completed the second of two major retail milestones for the year with the August opening of six new-look speciality stores in the eastern side of the ambitious airside redevelopment. Additionally JR/Duty Free has opened a luxury watches area; and more exciting retail and food & beverage developments are imminent as the airport (and the whole country) builds up for Rugby World Cup year in 2011.

Denver reveals US$900 million South Terminal plans

US.Denver International Airport has unveiled plans for its South Terminal Redevelopment Programme. The US$900 million project, which includes a hotel, conference centre, downtown rail link, signature rail bridge and plaza, is scheduled for completion in 2016. Sydney Airport launches strong advertising platform at new T1

The five-year contract with London Luton Airport Operations was awarded following a competitive tender. JCDecaux Airport has operated advertising at London Luton since 2000.

Gebr Heinemann continues roll-out of new retail identity with latest store at Bratislava Airport

SLOVAKIA. Gebr Heinemann this week unveiled a new, enlarged travel retail store at Bratislava Airport under the Heinemann Duty Free brand name. Among the highlights is a specially designed Regionals zone, featuring Slovak spirits, liqueurs, wafers, chocolates and gifts. The Hamburg-based travel retailer has operated at the airport since 2007.

Westfield to redevelop concessions programme at Chicago T5

US. The Chicago Department of Aviation (CDA) has selected Westfield Concessions Management II LLC as its preferred bidder to redevelop the concessions programme at Chicago O’Hare International Airport Terminal 5. The deal includes the creation of new spaces for duty free, food & beverage, news & gifts and speciality retail.

GMR-Malaysia Airports consortium wins Malé Airport bid

MALDIVES. A consortium led by GMR Infrastructure Limited and Malaysia Airports has won the bid to manage and develop Malé International Airport under a 25-year contract. The alliance beat competition from rival consortia led by TAV Airports Holding and Aéroports de Paris, and by GVK in partnership with Zürich Airport.

Historic first flight lands at Dubai World Central

UAE. Dubai Airports paved the way for the opening of Dubai World Central–Al Maktoum International Airport with the first flight into the facility on Monday. The new airport, which will open in phases in the coming years, will begin cargo operations on 27 June. Passenger operations are slated to open in March 2011.

Grupo Vierci to launch ambitious duty free venture in Chile

CHILE. Grupo Vierci, a leading South American retail-to-media company, is set to open what it says is Chile’s largest duty free store, the Mega Shopping outlet in the Iquique Free Zone. The 1,218sq m store – due open in September – will be located in Mall Zofri, the retail heart of South America’s largest tax free zone.

Eight companies pre-qualify for Medina Airport project

SAUDI ARABIA. Eight airport companies have pre-qualified for a forthcoming tender to build a new terminal at Medina Prince Mohammed Bin Abdulaziz Airport. The tender is scheduled for September, with a winner to be announced in November, and work on the US$1.5 billion project will begin in the first quarter of 2011.

WDF launches new walk-through store at Bournemouth Airport

UK. WDF has officially opened its new World Duty Free store airside at Bournemouth Airport. The move follows a ten-year contract extension and comes amid the redevelopment of Bournemouth Airport’s commercial facilities. The 3,997sq ft walk-through store features larger areas for liquor, beauty and luxury goods, plus a range of brands not previously available.
