Higher retail spend lifts Schiphol Group commercial activities

NETHERLANDS. Schiphol Group has reported a solid +2.8% year-on-year rise in revenues from its Consumers Business Area in H1 2010, to €137.6 million. Crucially, average spend in the See Buy Fly shops rose by +3.4% to €15.74 in the half. The division’s revenues were hit to the tune of €2.7 million by the volcanic ash cloud in April and May. Revenue for the group as a whole hit €545 million in the half, down by -1.5%, though profits grew sharply.

Dufry plots ambitious expansion in 2010

INTERNATIONAL. Dufry Group plans to open close to 20,000sq m of new retail space in 2010, covering 152 stores, CEO Julián Díaz told analysts after Thursday’s half-year results announcement. More than half of the stores will open in Q3 and Q4, with a strong contribution from Dufry’s Hudson acquisition. Díaz also reiterated the retailer’s desire to expand in emerging markets, with Russia, China and India of particular interest.

Canadian airport duty free sales climb in first half

CANADA. Airport duty free sales in Canada climbed by +12% year-on-year to C$96 million (US$92.7 million) in the first six months of 2010, according to figures from the Canadian Border Services Agency, reported by the Frontier Duty Free Association (FDFA). Land border sales fell marginally (-0.5%) to C$56.8 million (US$54.8 million) in the same period. Both channels showed good sales growth in June.

Singapore shopping promotion drives tourism spend

SINGAPORE. Singapore’s tourism industry received a major boost over the first month of the annual Great Singapore Sale (GSS) as visitor spending (with MasterCard) rose +21% to US$158.1 million in the period from 28 May to 26 June. Spending from local and tourist MasterCard holders combined surged by +23%.

Onboard Retail Solutions forges new market for tourist pass firm

UK. Onboard Retail Solutions has signed an agreement with Leisure Pass Group to enable passengers to buy world city passes during their flight, allowing them to visit major tourist attractions for a reduced entry price. "A fabulous distribution box is now ticked,” says Leisure Pass Group Sales Manager Peter Muttitt of the new inflight deal.

Sydney Airport makes consumer-friendly move on parking

AUSTRALIA. Sydney Airport has introduced a free 0–15 minutes time band at its International Terminal car park. The move marks a significant, consumer-friendly change: previously vehicles which used the car park for less than 15 minutes paid the 0–30 minute rate of A$7 (US$6).

Hellenic Duty Free Shops structure streamlined in share transfer

GREECE. The boards of Folli Follie, Hellenic Duty Free Shops and Elmec Sport – all part of the wider Folli Follie Group – have moved to streamline the structure of the company through a transfer of shares between each. Currently, Folli Follie owns 56.78% of Hellenic Duty Free Shops, while Hellenic in turn owns 95.6% of Elmec Sport.

Malaysia Airports posts robust rise in retail revenue

MALAYSIA. Malaysia Airports Holdings has posted revenues of RM436.41 million (US$135.4 million) for the first quarter ended 31 March 2010, up by +11.89% over the same period in 2009. Revenue from the group's retail arm, Eraman Malaysia, grew by +24.71%. The news comes amid a major retail investment programme at five of the company's key airports.

Grupo Vierci to launch ambitious duty free venture in Chile

CHILE. Grupo Vierci, a leading South American retail-to-media company, is set to open what it says is Chile’s largest duty free store, the Mega Shopping outlet in the Iquique Free Zone. The 1,218sq m store – due open in September – will be located in Mall Zofri, the retail heart of South America’s largest tax free zone.

LSG Sky Chefs has finalised an exclusive partnership agreement with Formia, the Hong Kong-based supplier of cosmetics, amenities and onboard accessories, to develop its inflight amenity kits and cosmetics business. The deal gives Formia access to a wider group of customers, synergies in logistics, supply chain and integrated services expertise.

INTERNATIONAL. Vueling CEO Alex Cruz (pictured) has joined a growing list of high-class speakers and attendees at the 2010 Airline Retail Conference, which takes place in July. Other speakers include Warwick Brady, former CEO of Mandala Airlines and now a Director at easyJet, as well as Julian Carr, Managing Director at bmibaby. Four of the top five airline ancillary revenue earners — AirAsia, easyJet, Ryanair and Vueling — have already signed up to take part, say the organisers.
