Leading premium fashion, luxury and sports eyewear group Luxottica has launched its first ever travel retail exclusive as part of the company’s ambitions to push the boundaries of the sunglasses category. ‘Ray-Ban for Travellers’ is an exclusive gift box set containing two pairs of sunglasses; one for men and one for women.

FRANCE. Felipe Oliveira Baptista takes over as the new Creative Director of French casual sportswear brand Lacoste from today. In other news, Lacoste has announced a change of partnership for eyewear, with Marchon Eyewear Inc taking over the licence from Charmant, effective January 2011.

UK. BAA today launched the Heathrow Travel Product Awards for 2010, which will recognise "the best travel accessories and gadgets" on offer at the airport. The awards will be decided by the British public, who are being encouraged to vote online for their favourite items. This year, 12 categories are being put to the public vote, including Travel Must-Have, Best Handbag, Top Travel Read and Best Travel Entertainment.

ITALY. Italian eyewear company Luxottica Group unveiled its strongest set of financial results ever in the second quarter of 2010, reaffirming its market-leading position. For the first time in the history of the group, net sales for the quarter approached €1.6 billion, with net income reaching €150 million.

INDIA. Delhi Duty Free Services, a three-way partnership between two of the industry’s leading retailers and Delhi International Airport Limited, has opened over 30,000sq ft of duty free shopping space at Indira Gandhi International Airport’s new Terminal 3 in Delhi. “Operating at T3, the sixth-largest terminal in the world with a 34 million passenger handling capacity, we expect huge footfall and see enormous scope for the growth of airport retailing in India," says Delhi Duty Free Services CEO Nicholas Goddard Palmer.

UK. Polaroid Eyewear has announced it will be exhibiting at the TFWA World Exhibition in Cannes for the first time this year. The company will introduce its 2010/11 collection for adults, as well as its licensed Disney and Hello Kitty lines for children and teens.

UK. Sunglasses brand Police is using WDF’s Contentainment digital media concept to engage with passengers this summer. To celebrate the launch of the movie ‘The Expendables’, bespoke digital content is being streamed on WDF’s Contentainment video walls in its stores at Heathrow T5, Gatwick South, Manchester, Glasgow, Jersey, Edinburgh, Birmingham and Bristol from 14 July to 24 August. And sales of the brand have already risen sharply two weeks into the campaign, says WDF.

UK. Puig Travel Retail and WDF have aunched the world’s first Paco Rabanne cross-category pop-up shop at Heathrow Airport T3. The store will open for an initial three months, coinciding with the summer season. The 32sq m Paco Rabanne ‘universe’ houses fragrances, watches and sunglasses from the brand’s portfolio. WDF Commercial Director Jo O’Connor hails the project, saying it has delivered “great theatre”.

FRANCE. LVMH Moët Hennessy Louis Vuitton, the world’s leading luxury products group, recorded revenue of €9.1 billion in the first half of 2010, up +16%, boosted by double-digit organic revenue growth in all business units. The Selective Distribution division, which includes leading travel retailer DFS, saw a +14% upswing in first-half revenue and recorded growth of +36% in profit from recurring operations.

ITALY. Marcolin and Diesel have signed a five-year licensing contract for the production and worldwide distribution of Diesel eyewear, including sunglasses. The agreement signals Marcolin's entry into the diffusion fashion segment currently dominated by brands such as Ray-Ban and Police.

ITALY. Luxury goods house Bulgari and Italian eyewear specialist Luxottica Group have announced a ten-year extension of their licensing agreement. The deal covers the design, production and worldwide distribution of prescription frames and sunglasses under the Bulgari brand.

CHINA. Tomorrow, 3 July, is an auspicious occasion as the new 96,000sq m international terminal opens at Hangzhou Xiaoshan International Airport. The commercial offer includes two highly ambitious and upscale retail stores run by China Duty Free Group (CDFG) set in the international and domestic lounges. CDFG President Lu Lu described the company’s partnership with the airport as “a great milestone”.

UK. Following the completion by BAA of its new security area at Edinburgh Airport, WDF has officially launched its World Duty Free store. The 6,942sq ft shop is the centrepiece of the newly designed airport facilities and has been re-located to sit immediately opposite the entrance into the Departures lounge. A first for World Duty Free, it also features a new-look World of Whiskies store.

SINGAPORE. Changi Airport Group has called a major tender for seven luxury brand name boutiques at Singapore Changi Airport Terminal 1. The tender is set to be one of the biggest this year at the key Asian gateway. The vital luxury concessions are to be tendered in two clusters, one for those above 100sq m and the other for those under 100sq m. The deadline for bids is 14 July.

UK/SOUTH AFRICA. Polaroid has reported a strong performance onboard South African Airways in its first listing season. Two models from Polaroid Eyewear’s collection were listed on the airline from March 2010, with the P4036a men’s metal item outselling the airline’s previous top selling brand, the brand claimed.
