SINGAPORE. Changi Airport has kicked off the Changi Grand Prix Festival in the run-up to the 2010 Singapore Formula 1 Night Race, which will be held on 24-26 September at the Marina Bay Street Circuit. Until the end of the month, Changi Airport passengers can experience a good dose of racing action at the Departure Transit Malls of Terminals 1, 2 and 3, while airport visitors can check out various racing-themed activities at T3’s Departure Hall. In addition, the airport has launched a ‘Save 2X 7% GST on Shopping’ promotion and free shuttle bus services.

NETHERLANDS. Schiphol Group has reported a solid +2.8% year-on-year rise in revenues from its Consumers Business Area in H1 2010, to €137.6 million. Crucially, average spend in the See Buy Fly shops rose by +3.4% to €15.74 in the half. The division’s revenues were hit to the tune of €2.7 million by the volcanic ash cloud in April and May. Revenue for the group as a whole hit €545 million in the half, down by -1.5%, though profits grew sharply.

A La Gate Carte has launched a new mobile merchandising solution which, it claims, will help airport retailers generate additional duty free sales and convert passengers into buyers: a motorised mobile retail store that delivers last minute and/or impulse purchasing opportunities to airport travellers.

Schiphol Group yesterday unveiled the Holland Boulevard, a high-class Dutch-themed retail, food & beverage, lounge and entertainment zone between piers E and F at Amsterdam Airport Schiphol. The area features the world’s first library at an airport, a unit celebrating the history of the Bols brand, a revamped museum store, massage, relaxation and kids’ play areas, plus an impressive Dutch Kitchen from HMSHost. Manchester Airport is the world’s number one airport Twitter feed, according to a new global survey by airport social media firm AirGate Solutions. “It’s fantastic to receive this recognition – during our recent experiences with snow and the volcanic ash cloud, Twitter became a vital channel,” says Manchester Airport’s Head of External Communications Russell Craig.

SWITZERLAND. Commercial activities at Zürich Airport maintained their robust performance in July as net sales to consumers from shops and restaurants climbed by +7.2% year-on-year to CHF44 million (US$41.5 million). Net sales per departing passenger increased by +1.3% over July 2009. Year-to-date commercial turnover is up by a healthy +5.7% against passenger traffic growth of +3.5%.

LATVIA. Riga International Airport has issued a tender for a master concessionaire to oversee management of all commercial spaces at the airport. The contract will run for ten years and will cover duty free, speciality retail, food & beverage, currency exchange, car rental, business lounges, banking and other services.

AUSTRALIA. Sydney Airport has introduced a free 0–15 minutes time band at its International Terminal car park. The move marks a significant, consumer-friendly change: previously vehicles which used the car park for less than 15 minutes paid the 0–30 minute rate of A$7 (US$6).

SINGAPORE. Changi Airport posted a +21.6% surge in passenger traffic for May – its highest monthly year-on-year gain in 2010. The Singapore gateway handled almost 3.39 million passengers during the month. The sharp increase reflects the continued strong recovery from a very soft early 2009 as well as favourable holiday factors, noted Changi Airport Group.

SINGAPORE. Emirates is making use of EYE’s digital media platform in Singapore Changi Airport – among other airports worldwide – to broadcast live coverage of the 2010 FIFA World Cup to travellers on the ground at Changi. Fans will also be able to get World Cup updates on their team’s progress with screenings of the most recent matches when they are onboard Emirates aircraft.

AUSTRALIA. A survey conducted by Sydney Airport Corporation has revealed that one in four Australian travellers suffer from varying degrees of stress prior to flying, prompting the launch of a humorous new term described as ‘pre-flight tension’, or ‘PFT’. The airport company, which last week unveiled its A$500 million T1 makeover, hopes that its new Departures precinct will provide a haven for travellers to de-stress – and has developed an irreverent advertising campaign to promote the concept.

CHINA/HONG KONG. Nuance-Watson (HK) has launched a series of special promotions at its Hong Kong International Airport stores to mark this year’s Expo 2010 in Shanghai, which runs until October.
