Yen strength buoys Japanese outbound market; DFS posts big gains in high-end sales

JAPAN. Travel retailers targeting Japanese travellers around the world are benefiting from the continued strength of the Yen against the US Dollar. DFS Chairman and CEO Ed Brennan told The Moodie Report: “Yen spending in our core Japanese markets has increased better than 10 points since the Yen’s strengthening to 85. Big ticket items such as watches and jewellery are seeing sales trends which are double other categories."

Lagardère, parent company of leading French travel retailer Aelia, reported the best performance among stocks listed on The Moodie Reportfolio for July 2010, while The Nuance Group co-parent Stefanel saw its shares slump by -92.3%. Economy to be boosted by young, free and single consumers in Asia Pacific: MasterCard survey

ASIA PACIFIC. Young, single and independent consumers are planning to save more, with over 40% of consumers in Asia Pacific preparing to save more in the six months ahead, according to the latest MasterCard survey on consumers’ saving priorities. This indicates a boost in future consumption, says MasterCard Worldwide Asia Pacific Economic Advisor Dr Yuwa Hedrick-Wong.

Euro remains key currency for UK travellers, says Amex

UK/INTERNATIONAL. The Euro remained the most popular currency among UK travellers in H1 2010, according to the latest Currency Index published by American Express Global Foreign Exchange Services. This, coupled with an increase in demand for the Hungarian Forint, Danish Krone and Croatian Kuna, points to a return in popularity for continental short breaks, American Express claims.

Singapore shopping promotion drives tourism spend

SINGAPORE. Singapore’s tourism industry received a major boost over the first month of the annual Great Singapore Sale (GSS) as visitor spending (with MasterCard) rose +21% to US$158.1 million in the period from 28 May to 26 June. Spending from local and tourist MasterCard holders combined surged by +23%.

MasterCard partners with Singapore’s premier integrated resort

SINGAPORE. MasterCard Worldwide has signed an agreement with Resorts World Sentosa making MasterCard the 'Preferred Card' at the premier integrated resort, which opened its doors in January. MasterCard will offer a range of cardholder incentives, seasonal marketing programmes and merchant offers.
