TAIWAN. Leading whisky showcase event Whisky Live & Fine Spirits Taipei welcomed 12,400 people at the Taipei World Trade Centre on 28-29 August. Some 60 Scotch brands were on display at the festival, which also featured whisky tastings, master classes and live entertainment. Taiwan is said to be the tenth largest export market for Scotch whisky by value, worth about £102 million in 2009.

JAPAN. Inbound visitor traffic to Japan in July broke previous records for that month, according to Travel Journal International (TJI) Online. Inbound travel rose by +38.9% year-on-year to the highest-ever monthly count of 879,100, TJI reported this week. Meanwhile outbound travel reached the highest level since 2007, largely driven by the strong Japanese Yen.

INTERNATIONAL. The first six months of 2010 saw international tourist arrivals grow by +7%, according to the August Interim Update of the UNWTO World Tourism Barometer. This result confirms the recovery trend which began in the last quarter of 2009, and is expected to continue in the second half of the year at a somewhat more moderate rate.

JAPAN/SOUTH KOREA. The Japanese are coming. And in very significant numbers, according to analysis of one of travel retail’s most important route networks – Japan to South Korea – by Travel Journal International (TJI) Online. May and June 2010 showed a double-digit year-on-year turnaround, thanks to stable exchange rates and improvement in the South Korean economy, TJI noted. These factors have also driven an influx of Koreans into Japan, a boon to travel retailers in locations such as Narita, Haneda and Kansai Airports.

KOREA. Incheon International Airport Corporation has teamed up with the Korea Cultural Heritage Foundation to promote traditional Korean culture, organising a special daily re-enactment of the traditional ‘Walk of the Royal Family’ which originated in Korea’s Joseon Dynasty. Through the event, the lives of Joseon royal families come alive thanks to performers dressed in the royal costumes of ancient times.

JAPAN. Hawaii is leading a surge in bookings for overseas travel among Japanese in August, according to the Japan Association of Travel Agents, whose figures were quoted by Travel Journal International Online. Package tour bookings for Hawaii in August are up by +36.1%, against a rise of +15.1% for all destinations.

US (HAWAII). June was a boom month for Hawaiian tourism as visitor spending rose +16.1% over a depressed June 2009 and tourism numbers increased by +13.6%. The preliminary statistics, released this week by the Hawaii Tourism Authority, were highlighted by a +47.8% surge in Japanese visitors.

THAILAND. Thailand’s tourism industry performed strongly in the first six months of 2010, posting double-digit growth in international arrivals, according to the latest figures from Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT). Arrivals from the Middle East led the way (+22.1%), followed by arrivals from South Asia (+16%), Europe (+15.9%), Asia (+12.3%) and the Pacific (+11.9%). Read on for details.

Christchurch Airport has seen a +45% increase in the number of passengers on flights from India to Christchurch over the past 12 months, driven by the success of joint-venture marketing and promotions between the airport and Tourism New Zealand. The most recent campaign targets Indian honeymooners.

ASIA PACIFIC. The Pacific Asia Travel Association (PATA) has reported that international visitor arrivals to the Asia Pacific region grew by +10% for the first five months of 2010. International visitor arrivals to the region for the months of April and May grew +7% and +16% respectively, boosted by the improving global economic environment.

Leading aircraft manufacturer Boeing forecasts a US$3.6 trillion market for new commercial aeroplanes over the next 20 years as world economies rebound and demand for new and replacement aircraft spurs growth. Asia Pacific, with China leading the way, will play a major role in driving growth, according to the Boeing 2010 Current Market Outlook.

JAPAN. Japanese outbound travel numbers will leap by +8.4% in the key summer season, with China and South Korea the major destinations, according to a new survey from leading agency JTB. Some 2.44 million Japanese will travel abroad between 15 July and 31 August, compared to 2.25 million in 2009. The bullish forecasts were reported by Travel Journal International Online.

SINGAPORE. Singapore’s tourism industry received a major boost over the first month of the annual Great Singapore Sale (GSS) as visitor spending (with MasterCard) rose +21% to US$158.1 million in the period from 28 May to 26 June. Spending from local and tourist MasterCard holders combined surged by +23%.

UK. The UK travel industry is bracing itself for a year of relatively slow growth and subdued consumer confidence in 2011. That’s according to the annual Barclays Corporate Travel Forum Survey, just published. But the long-term prospects for the travel industry are brighter, notes the survey.

UK. Onboard Retail Solutions has signed an agreement with Leisure Pass Group to enable passengers to buy world city passes during their flight, allowing them to visit major tourist attractions for a reduced entry price. "A fabulous distribution box is now ticked,” says Leisure Pass Group Sales Manager Peter Muttitt of the new inflight deal.

US (Hawaii). Japanese visitor arrivals to Hawaii surged by +25.6% year-on-year in May, helping to drive a +31.8% increase in total expenditure by this key nationality. With a sharp recent increase in other Asian flights to Hawaii, the business outlook is “looking more positive by the day” one prominent retail executive told The Moodie Report.

That’s according to the latest issue of the UNWTO World Tourism Barometer. The Middle East posted growth of +33% in the period, with Asia Pacific also performing well (+12%), though the figures compare with a weak 2009.

ASIA PACIFIC. International visitor arrivals to Asia Pacific leapt by +10% year-on-year in Q1 2010, the Pacific Asia Travel Association (PATA) has reported. All regions posted healthy growth, with encouraging double-digits rises in South Asia and Southeast Asia.

JAPAN. Japan’s 61 major travel agencies reported sales of Y152.73 billion (US$1.66 billion) in April, a rise of +1.7% on the same month last year, according to figures from the Japan Tourism Agency published by Travel Journal International (TJI) Online. This was the second straight month of growth, with inbound travel driving the increases.
