International tourist arrivals grow +7% in first-half 2010

INTERNATIONAL. The first six months of 2010 saw international tourist arrivals grow by +7%, according to the August Interim Update of the UNWTO World Tourism Barometer. This result confirms the recovery trend which began in the last quarter of 2009, and is expected to continue in the second half of the year at a somewhat more moderate rate.

INTERNATIONAL. Passenger traffic at the world’s airports continued to rebound in July, according to the latest figures from Airports Council International (ACI). International passenger numbers surged by +9.5% year-on-year, with total traffic growing by +6.9%, a slower rate than in previous months. Asia Pacific and Latin America-Caribbean each posted impressive growth of +14% in the month.

INTERNATIONAL. International passenger demand surged by +9.2% year-on-year in July (measured in Revenue Passenger Kilometres), according to the latest figures from the International Air Transport Association (IATA). Crucially, July global passenger traffic was +3% higher than the pre-crisis levels of early 2008. IATA chief Giovanni Bisignani says: “Improving demand is an important component of the recovery. But it must translate to the bottom line."

South Korea surges in popularity with Japanese travellers

JAPAN/SOUTH KOREA. The Japanese are coming. And in very significant numbers, according to analysis of one of travel retail’s most important route networks – Japan to South Korea – by Travel Journal International (TJI) Online. May and June 2010 showed a double-digit year-on-year turnaround, thanks to stable exchange rates and improvement in the South Korean economy, TJI noted. These factors have also driven an influx of Koreans into Japan, a boon to travel retailers in locations such as Narita, Haneda and Kansai Airports.

UAE. Dubai International Airport has reported record passenger numbers for July, with volumes passing 4 million for the first time ever. The Middle Eastern hub handled 4.3 million passengers in the month, up by +14.3% on July 2009, with the strongest growth coming from Eastern Europe, Asia Pacific and Russia & CIS routes. Dubai Airports CEO Paul Griffiths says: “This is an important milestone that reflects the consistent growth we have seen over the past years."

Preliminary figures for July released today by the Association of Asia Pacific Airlines (AAPA) provide further evidence of the strength of the recovery in both passenger and freight markets, with volumes surpassing pre-recession levels. “Asia Pacific airlines are generally well placed to benefit from the improving business environment, and are making some measured additions to capacity and selective expansion of their route networks,” said AAPA Director General Andrew Herdman.

Key Asian arrivals boost Auckland Airport international traffic

NEW ZEALAND. Auckland Airport has reported +4.9% growth in international passenger traffic (excluding transits) year-on-year for the month of July. International arrivals were once again buoyed by Asian passenger traffic, with Japanese arrivals doubling over last year, and Korean and Chinese volumes also up sharply.

SINGAPORE. Singapore Changi Airport has posted a +15.9% year-on-year growth in passenger traffic movements to 3.67 million in July – the highest monthly traffic recorded at Changi so far this year. For the year to date the airport has handled a total of 23.9 million passengers, up by a healthy +16.9% compared to the first seven months of 2009.

Aéroports de Paris has posted a +3.1% year-on-year increase in passenger traffic for July, with Charles de Gaulle Airport handling 5.9 million passengers (+3.2%) and Orly Airport (+2.8%) 2.6 million. International traffic (excluding Europe) continued to shine as all market sectors except Latin America recorded growth, culminating in an overall +5.8% rise compared to July 2009.

HONG KONG. Strong summer traffic momentum continued for Hong Kong International Airport as all three traffic categories recorded double-digit growth in July. Airport Authority Hong Kong CEO Stanley Hui Hon-chung said: “The market rebound during the summer holiday travel season has been particularly strong. July saw a high average load factor of close to 80% for passenger flights at HKIA.”

IRELAND. Passenger numbers at Dublin Airport hit 2.03 million in July, a -4% decline on the same month last year, according to the Dublin Airport Authority (DAA). UK traffic dropped by -9% while transatlantic volumes dipped by -5% compared to July 2009. In the year to date, passenger traffic has fallen by -14%.

Orlando Airport posts surge in international passenger traffic

US. Orlando International Airport handled 2,938,672 passengers in June, an increase of +2.1% on the previous year. International passengers numbered 249,034 – a solid year-on-year rise of +12.2%. Domestic passengers numbered 2,689,638, up by a marginal +1.3%.

Commercial activities at Zürich Airport maintained their robust performance in July as net sales to consumers from shops and restaurants climbed by +7.2% year-on-year to CHF44 million (US$41.5 million). Net sales per departing passenger increased by +1.3% over July 2009. Year-to-date commercial turnover is up by a healthy +5.7% against passenger traffic growth of +3.5%.

UK. BAA’s flagship airport, London Heathrow, recorded its busiest-ever month in July, with 6.7 million people making journeys through the location, +3.5% more than last year. Sunday 18 July was Heathrow's busiest-ever day, with 232,000 passengers. Results across other group airports were mixed though, with London Stansted seeing a drop of -7.2% due to reduced capacity.

GERMANY. Strong passenger growth of +10% year-on-year in July has put Berlin Airports on course for record annual traffic in 2010. The group, which operates Schoenefeld and Tegel airports in the capital, handled 2.16 million passengers in the month and 12.3 million in the first seven months, up by +4.4%.

Heathrow, Paris, Hong Kong lead international passenger rankings

INTERNATIONAL. London Heathrow, Paris Charles de Gaulle and Hong Kong International were the top three airports ranked by international passenger numbers in 2009. That’s according to Airports Council International’s (ACI) World Airport Traffic Report for the year, just released. The top-ranked airport by total passengers numbers was Atlanta (mainly domestic US), while a remarkable 17 of the 25 fastest growing airports were in China.

US (HAWAII). June was a boom month for Hawaiian tourism as visitor spending rose +16.1% over a depressed June 2009 and tourism numbers increased by +13.6%. The preliminary statistics, released this week by the Hawaii Tourism Authority, were highlighted by a +47.8% surge in Japanese visitors.

ASIA PACIFIC. June traffic figures released by the Association of Asia Pacific Airlines underline the economic recovery, the organisation said. Asia Pacific-based airlines carried 15.1 million international passengers in June, a +25.2% gain compared to the depressed volumes seen in June 2009.

SINGAPORE. Singapore Changi Airport registered 3.62 million passenger movements in June 2010, an +18.6% increase year-on-year. Significantly, this was almost +13% more than in June 2008, the group noted. Passenger growth this June was led by traffic to and from Southeast Asia, Northeast Asia, South Asia and North America. Double-digit growth was recorded for all these regions.

THAILAND. Thailand’s airports handled 17.67 million international passengers in the first six months of 2010, a leap of +13.0% on the same period last year. The robust figures come despite the impact of political unrest around Bangkok in the period from March to May. In June alone, international passenger volumes across the Airports of Thailand network rose by +4.0%.

DENMARK. Passenger numbers at Copenhagen Airport climbed by +9.3% year-on-year in June, to 2.09 million. The figure was just 5,000 down on the all-time record for the month, which was set in 2008. Year-to-date passenger growth stands at +5.7%.

Munich Airport posts ‘dynamic gains’ in June passenger traffic

GERMANY. Passenger traffic at Munich Airport climbed by a healthy +12% year-on-year in June to 3.2 million, and by +3% in H1 2010 to 15.8 million. Long-haul traffic has been critical to driving growth, with a +12% surge in the first half. A buoyant company CEO Michael Kerkloh said: "The negative trend is clearly at an end, and Munich Airport is again posting dynamic gains."

GERMANY. Despite the combined impact of poor winter weather, strikes and the Icelandic ash cloud, passenger figures at Frankfurt Airport rose +7% in June and +1.4% in the first half. Fraport Executive Board Chairman Dr. Stefan Schulte said: "These numbers convincingly show that the finance and economic crisis has been overcome and that the aviation industry... is back on track to reaching and even exceeding the results of the pre-crisis years."

TAV Airports posts double-digit surge in H1 passenger numbers

SINGAPORE. Changi Airport posted a +21.6% surge in passenger traffic for May – its highest monthly year-on-year gain in 2010. The Singapore gateway handled almost 3.39 million passengers during the month. The sharp increase reflects the continued strong recovery from a very soft early 2009 as well as favourable holiday factors, noted Changi Airport Group.

BAA (SP) releases robust financial forecast for full year

BAA (SP) Limited, the owner of London Heathrow and Stansted airports, today published a bullish set of forecasts for the financial year to 31 December 2010, including a predicted healthy rise in gross retail income and in net retail income per passenger. Passenger numbers are expected to be 85.2 million at the two airports, down on the previous forecast due to the effects of the volcanic ash cloud and airline industrial action.

HONG KONG. Passenger traffic at Hong Kong International Airport (HKIA) hit 4.1 million in May, a surge of +14.4% on the same period last year. The double-digit increase was partly due to the comparison with a weak May in 2009, caused by the swine flu scare. Frankfurt Airport posts record May for passenger numbers

GERMANY. Frankfurt Airport handled 4.76 million passengers in May, a +7.1% surge compared to May 2009, parent company Fraport said today. The figure was a record for the month of May. Fraport AG Executive Board Chairman Dr. Stefan Schulte said the “extremely satisfying figures" confirmed the upward trend in passenger volumes of recent months.

Ash cloud impact and British Airways strike hit BAA traffic in May

UK. BAA passenger traffic fell by -4.5% year-on-year to 8.6 million, the airports group reported today. The decline was due to the continuing impact of April’s volcanic ash cloud, allied to British Airways’ cabin crew strike action. Without these effects, traffic volumes would have increased in the month, said BAA. Passenger numbers at key travel retail location Heathrow dipped by -3.1%.

Vienna Airport posts robust passenger growth in May

AUSTRIA. Vienna International Airport handled 1,788,516 passengers during May 2010, an increase of +11.4% year-on-year. There was strong growth on its key routes to Eastern Europe (+14.5%), while Middle East traffic also posted a robust increase.

Vilnius Airport adds key retail and food & beverage outlets

LITHUANIA. Vilnius International Airport is to open a series of new retail and food & beverage outlets over the summer months, including a new store from Gebr Heinemann partner UAB Travel Retail Vilnius. The move comes as passenger traffic rises sharply at the location (+19% year-on-year in May).

Airline industry set to return to profit in 2010, says bullish IATA

The International Air Transport Association (IATA) expects airlines worldwide to post a profit of US$2.5 billion in 2010 – a major improvement compared with IATA’s previous forecast of a US$2.8 billion loss. “The top line improvement this year puts us about 75% on the way to pre-crisis levels,” says IATA Director General and CEO Giovanni Bisignani.

ASUR traffic surges on comparisons with tough 2009

MEXICO. Passenger traffic at Grupo Aeroportuario del Sureste (ASUR) airports surged by +85.8% year-on-year in May, to 1.37 million. The strong figures come from comparisons with a devastating May in 2009, when the H1N1 virus hit the travel and tourism business in Mexico hard.
