Confectionery holds up well as sales lag behind traffic at Hellenic

GREECE. More details have emerged about Hellenic Duty Free Shops’ first half results, released earlier this week. Hellenic said that sales (-8.9%) had not kept pace with passenger growth (+1.1%), falling particularly sharply in April (volcano cloud) and June. Confectionery, up +4.0%, resisted the negative trend.

P&G Prestige makes key new travel retail appointment

Chanel channels the blues with new men’s fragrance

FRANCE. Chanel’s new men’s fragrance, Bleu de Chanel, is now rolling out in the travel retail channel. It is the brand’s first major male fragrance since the introduction of Allure Homme Sport in 2004. Bleu de Chanel is being supported by both print and TV advertising campaigns, the latter directed by Martin Scorsese. The fragrance face is French actor Gaspard Ulliel.

Aldeasa launches first walk-through concept in Spain

SPAIN. Aldeasa has inaugurated two new stores, ‘The Shop’ and ‘The Express Shop’ at Barcelona El Prat Airport Terminal 2. Crucially, The Shop is the first walkthrough concept for AENA and Aldeasa at an airport in Spain, says the retailer. Now it plans to extend the concept to Madrid-Barajas and Alicante airports.

Pricing study claims online retailers offer better value than tax free

INTERNATIONAL. The Estée Lauder Companies has reported net sales of US$7.8 billion for the fiscal year ended June 30, 2010, a +6% increase compared with the previous fiscal year. Net earnings for the year were US$478.3 million, leaping from US$218.4 million last year. Strong sales growth came from the international businesses, particularly in travel retail, Asia Pacific and emerging markets.

Having completed the acquisition of fellow Korean travel retailer AK Duty Free late last month, Lotte Duty Free is eyeing further growth opportunities. “We finished the AK acquisition after many obstacles and we changed to the Lotte name in three shops at Incheon International [perfumes & cosmetics], Gimpo and Coex,” Lotte Duty Free President YS Choi told The Moodie Report. Duty free sales outpace passenger growth in Abu Dhabi

UAE. Duty free retail turnover at Abu Dhabi International Airport grew by +19% year-on-year during the first half of 2010 to US$75 million. This figure was driven by an impressive +7.2% rise in per-passenger spend to US$14.47. Abu Dhabi Airports Company Chief Commercial Officer Huraiz Almur bin Huraiz says: “Retail spending at our airport is significantly stronger than passenger growth (+11.7%), a clear sign that we are succeeding in encouraging travellers to spend more."

LVMH posts strong first half; retail division records healthy growth

LVMH Moët Hennessy Louis Vuitton, the world’s leading luxury products group, recorded revenue of €9.1 billion in the first half of 2010, up +16%, boosted by double-digit organic revenue growth in all business units. The Selective Distribution division, which includes leading travel retailer DFS, saw a +14% upswing in first-half revenue and recorded growth of +36% in profit from recurring operations.

Coty signs licence agreement with Roberto Cavalli Group

FRANCE. L’Oréal has reported strong sales growth for first-half 2010. For the period ended 30 June, turnover grew +10.2% to €9.67 billion (+6.3% on a like-for-like basis). Results in the Luxury Products Division were boosted by growth in the New Markets zone, which was driven by strong performances in Asia, Latin America and travel retail.

Dubai Duty Free tops US$607 million in powerful first-half showing

Beauty Contact harnesses star power with new celebrity scents

UAE. Beauty Contact has signed a global distribution agreement with UK-based Jigsaw, adding several new brands to its growing portfolio. Under the agreement, Beauty Contact will distribute the brands Katie Price, Westlife, Storm, and Lambretta (among others) worldwide, except in the UK where Jigsaw handles its own licensed brands. The agreement also sees Jigsaw becoming the distributor for Beauty Contact’s Cadillac and Madonna Nudes 1979 fragrances in the UK, South Africa and Australia.

US. The Estée Lauder Companies has confirmed that on closing its acquisition of Smashbox Beauty Cosmetics, Beth DiNardo will become Global General Manager of the brand. DiNardo will report to Caroline Geerlings, who will be taking on responsibilities for new businesses. She in turn will report to Group President John Demsey.

The Big Pony Fragrance Collection will be available in travel retail from July. Each scent aims to embody a different message or mood, allowing the target market to express one or all of its passions and personality through fragrance, according to L’Oréal. The brand message to men is: “Get in the Game”.
