GREECE. More details have emerged about Hellenic Duty Free Shops’ first half results, released earlier this week. Hellenic said that sales (-8.9%) had not kept pace with passenger growth (+1.1%), falling particularly sharply in April (volcano cloud) and June. Confectionery, up +4.0%, resisted the negative trend.

UK. BAA today launched the Heathrow Travel Product Awards for 2010, which will recognise "the best travel accessories and gadgets" on offer at the airport. The awards will be decided by the British public, who are being encouraged to vote online for their favourite items. This year, 12 categories are being put to the public vote, including Travel Must-Have, Best Handbag, Top Travel Read and Best Travel Entertainment.

UK. WDF has launched its first ‘Whiskyfest’ event, which runs across World Duty Free stores at Scottish airports for nine weeks from August to October this year. Belvédère Duty Free has reported significant sales improvements for Danzka Vodka and Sobieski Vodka in South America. “Sales in Latin America have been especially strong – way above last year. We are on track to reach the 2008 level, which was a record year for us. Delhi Duty Free Services, a three-way partnership between two of the industry’s leading retailers and Delhi International Airport Limited, has opened over 30,000sq ft of duty free shopping space at Indira Gandhi International Airport’s new Terminal 3 in Delhi. “Operating at T3, the sixth-largest terminal in the world with a 34 million passenger handling capacity, we expect huge footfall and see enormous scope for the growth of airport retailing in India," says Delhi Duty Free Services CEO Nicholas Goddard Palmer.

RUSSIA. Russian Standard Vodka bottles will now feature a special label certifying their 100% Russian origin and adherence to traditional vodka production methods recognised by the Russian Federation government. The official Certificate of Origin stamp was introduced to help consumers distinguish genuine Russian vodka and is being applied to current production at the company’s distillery in St Petersburg. Bottles bearing the stamp will roll out on shelves over the next two to four months.

To mark the 150th anniversary of glass designer René Lalique’s birth, The Macallan and Lalique have come together to create a one-of-a-kind decanter to benefit charity: water – a non-profit organization bringing clean, safe drinking water to people in developing nations. The Macallan in Lalique Cire Perdue, the oldest and rarest whisky ever released by the distillery, will be auctioned in New York at Sotheby's this November. It is currently on a world tour and so far almost US$40,000 has been raised.

UAE. Duty free retail turnover at Abu Dhabi International Airport grew by +19% year-on-year during the first half of 2010 to US$75 million. This figure was driven by an impressive +7.2% rise in per-passenger spend to US$14.47. Abu Dhabi Airports Company Chief Commercial Officer Huraiz Almur bin Huraiz says: “Retail spending at our airport is significantly stronger than passenger growth (+11.7%), a clear sign that we are succeeding in encouraging travellers to spend more."

LVMH Moët Hennessy Louis Vuitton, the world’s leading luxury products group, recorded revenue of €9.1 billion in the first half of 2010, up +16%, boosted by double-digit organic revenue growth in all business units. The Selective Distribution division, which includes leading travel retailer DFS, saw a +14% upswing in first-half revenue and recorded growth of +36% in profit from recurring operations.

SOUTH AFRICA. Experienced duty free executive Anthony Budd hopes the soccer World Cup has whet travel retailers' appetites for South African wines. He has set up a new trading company, Diverse Flavours, to export South African wines, food and beverages. Based in Cape Town, Budd is working with five wineries to develop their products in duty free. In May 2010, Hidden Valley Secret 2006 became the first South African wine to be sold onboard Korean Air.

FRANCE. Leading French travel retailer Aelia has begun the roll-out of its new retail identity, Aelia Duty Free, to its latest stores at Bordeaux Mérignac and Lille Lesquin airports. The company’s updated retail brand, complete with new-look fascia, was first introduced across Aelia's stores at Nice Côte d'Azur Airport in May.

SOUTH KOREA. Ballantine’s Scotch whisky, Camus Cognac, Estée Lauder and Chanel fragrances led Korean Air’s inflight duty free sales rankings by value for June in their respective categories. Hawaiian Sun (confectionery) and Swarovski (miscellaneous) were among the other strong performers for the world's leading inflight retail operation.

NETHERLANDS. Amsterdam Airport Schiphol is celebrating the FIFA World Cup, and the Dutch team's triumphant run through to the final, with a host of soccer-themed events. The Dutch operator has even placed its own specially designed football stadium in front of the airport entrance, seating 325 people. All airport users can watch the matches live on the Astrovision screen.

CHINA. Tomorrow, 3 July, is an auspicious occasion as the new 96,000sq m international terminal opens at Hangzhou Xiaoshan International Airport. The commercial offer includes two highly ambitious and upscale retail stores run by China Duty Free Group (CDFG) set in the international and domestic lounges. CDFG President Lu Lu described the company’s partnership with the airport as “a great milestone”.

UK. A film for Johnnie Walker Scotch whisky has scooped a prestigious Cannes Lions Gold medal. ‘The Man Who Walked Around the World’, featuring Scottish actor Robert Carlyle, tells the story of Johnnie Walker, the world’s best-selling Scotch whisky.

SABMiller Travel Retail & Duty Free has unveiled a bespoke Grolsch bar in one of British Airways’ flagship lounges at Heathrow Airport Terminal 5, coinciding with some of the summer’s major sporting events, including the FIFA World Cup. Bar staff have been trained to serve customers the Dutch beer brand’s iconic Swingtop bottle using one of six opening techniques – Swingtop Chop, The Slice, Booty Pop, The Drop, Klik and Snatch.

UK. Following the completion by BAA of its new security area at Edinburgh Airport, WDF has officially launched its World Duty Free store. The 6,942sq ft shop is the centrepiece of the newly designed airport facilities and has been re-located to sit immediately opposite the entrance into the Departures lounge. A first for World Duty Free, it also features a new-look World of Whiskies store.

Berry Bros & Rudd marked several achievements for its single malt Scotch whisky brand The Glenrothes during the month of May, most notably its official launch in China at the second Whisky Live tasting show in Shanghai. AUSTRALIA. The Nuance Group has introduced a ground-breaking new way of presenting malt whiskies at its Sydney International Airport store, opened earlier this year. Dubbed a first in duty free, the finest malt whiskies have been categorised by their flavour profiles, rather than their region of origin at SYD Airport Tax & Duty Free's Departures store, designed to make it easier for travellers to choose a product.

US. Southern Comfort is to donate up to US$250,000 to the Gulf Relief Foundation to help the fishing community and support wetland preservation following the recent devastating oil spill. The brand is kicking off the effort with an initial donation of US$50,000 while aiming to raise an additional US$200,000 via a Facebook initiative and a donation per bottle sold campaign.

US. Ruskova Vodka, positioned as ‘the world’s only value-priced genuine Russian vodka’, will soon be available in Latin America. Aiming to replicate the brand's US development, Ruskova brand Owner Oleg Lazanovitch is now in negotiations to list Ruskova in duty free shops throughout Latin America and onboard cruise ships.

UK. Glenfiddich has announced details of its 1978 Vintage Reserve, selected by a global panel, with a nosing and tasting session discussed live on the microblogging site Twitter. After two hours of tweeted discussion, cask number 28152 was selected from a shortlist of four American oak hogshead casks to be the Vintage Reserve.

UK. WDF has officially opened its new World Duty Free store airside at Bournemouth Airport. The move follows a ten-year contract extension and comes amid the redevelopment of Bournemouth Airport’s commercial facilities. The 3,997sq ft walk-through store features larger areas for liquor, beauty and luxury goods, plus a range of brands not previously available.

FRANCE/CANADA. A rare bottle of Louis XIII Black Pearl has been sold by Aldeasa at Vancouver International Airport for US$34,000, to a couple travelling home to Mainland China. At the time of the sale – which marks the single largest transaction in Aldeasa Vancouver’s history – this rare bottle from Rémy Martin was one of the last available.

The Rémy Cointreau Group reported a strong revenue and profit performance for the 2009/10 financial year ended 31 March, which it said was due to improved distribution, price increases plus investment. Turnover was €807.8 million, an increase of +13.1% (+12.0% organic) while operating profit grew +7.2% to €140 million.

MEXICO. Tequila Corralejo is spearheading a drive into travel retail with its tequila range in the 200th anniversary year of Mexico's Independence. This year's historic celebrations represent a milestone for the brand because the liberation was led by Miguel Hidalgo y Costilla, who was born in Hacienda Corralejo.

ASIA PACIFIC. Vinexpo Asia Pacific, the region’s largest international wine and spirits exhibition, has wrapped up its 2010 exhibition with record numbers. The event welcomed 12,617 professional visitors, +42% more than in 2008. Of these, 43.5% came from Hong Kong and Macau and the other 56.5% from 24 other Asia Pacific countries. China contributed 4,136 visitors, nearly double the number that came in 2008.

SINGAPORE. French liqueur Bénédictine D.O.M has unveiled a new limited edition bottle commemorating its 500th anniversary with DFS at Singapore Changi Airport. The roll-out this year coincides with the 50th anniversary of DFS, a longstanding partner of Bénédictine D.O.M and Bacardi Global Travel Retail. Changi is the first airport in the world to launch the new edition. Benedictine is a member of the Bacardi portfolio of premium brands.

ITALY. Italian spirits producer Distilleria Bottega has set a new Guinness World Record for the biggest bottle of grappa ever produced. The bottle measures 1.86 metres in height and contains 138 litres of prosecco grappa.

RUSSIA. Russian Standard Vodka launched Russian Standard Gold into the travel retail market at the TFWA Asia Pacific exhibition in Singapore last month. Russian Standard Gold combines Dmitry Mendeleev’s classic vodka formula and selected extracts of Siberian ginseng in an embossed golf foil label packaging.

UK. Rémy Cointreau Global Travel Retail and WDF are presenting the super-premium Cognac Louis XIII de Rémy Martin in a special display at all terminals in London Heathrow Airport. The centrepiece of the display, themed ‘A Century in a Bottle’, is a black crystal decanter of Louis XIII Rare Cask, one of only 786 bottles in the world.
