GREECE. More details have emerged about Hellenic Duty Free Shops’ first half results, released earlier this week. Hellenic said that sales (-8.9%) had not kept pace with passenger growth (+1.1%), falling particularly sharply in April (volcano cloud) and June. Confectionery, up +4.0%, resisted the negative trend.

UK. Clogau has launched a new lifestyle marketing campaign called ‘Touch’ – a first for the Welsh jewellery brand. The campaign was shot by fashion photographer John Oakley, whose work includes campaigns for Basia Zarzycka and Gossard, and features model Jessica Price and Miss Wales 2009 Lucy Whitehouse.

INDIA. Delhi Duty Free Services, a three-way partnership between two of the industry’s leading retailers and Delhi International Airport Limited, has opened over 30,000sq ft of duty free shopping space at Indira Gandhi International Airport’s new Terminal 3 in Delhi. “Operating at T3, the sixth-largest terminal in the world with a 34 million passenger handling capacity, we expect huge footfall and see enormous scope for the growth of airport retailing in India," says Delhi Duty Free Services CEO Nicholas Goddard Palmer.

NEW ZEALAND. Auckland Airport has completed the second of two major retail milestones for the year with the August opening of six new-look speciality stores in the eastern side of the ambitious airside redevelopment. Additionally JR/Duty Free has opened a luxury watches area; and more exciting retail and food & beverage developments are imminent as the airport (and the whole country) builds up for Rugby World Cup year in 2011.

UK. Leading Welsh gold jewellery brand Clogau is aiming to start a new type of gold rush at this year’s TFWA World Exhibition in Cannes. All visitors to the Clogau stand (Yellow Village: D35) during the first four days of the show will have their business card entered into a special prize draw for a unique necklace.

According to a study by shopping comparison website Kelkoo, tax free goods across Europe's ten busiest airports are priced on average -6.2% cheaper than their equivalent in local high street stores (based on a sample of 22 selected products). US. Skagen Designs, the affordable luxury accessories company known for its minimalist watches, is celebrating continued success in the Asia Pacific region and onboard airlines. The firm is gearing up for its new 'Snowfall in Skagen' advertising campaign breaking at Christmas, in which the watches are marketed as 'Timeless gifts inspired by Denmark'.

US. US jewellery supplier Gold Silk has announced new listings with Dufry Americas. Gold Silk’s Classic ladies collection and children’s Storybook Jewels will be offered onboard four Norwegian Cruise Line ships. The travel retailer has also placed Gold Silk collections in two other Caribbean flagship pier stores.

UAE. Duty free retail turnover at Abu Dhabi International Airport grew by +19% year-on-year during the first half of 2010 to US$75 million. This figure was driven by an impressive +7.2% rise in per-passenger spend to US$14.47. Abu Dhabi Airports Company Chief Commercial Officer Huraiz Almur bin Huraiz says: “Retail spending at our airport is significantly stronger than passenger growth (+11.7%), a clear sign that we are succeeding in encouraging travellers to spend more."

Copenhagen Airport has opened a Pandora concept store as part of its strategy to offer greater price differentiation and more affordable brands. “Jewellery and accessories are very much ‘in’ at the moment and in high demand with passengers,” says Copenhagen Airports Vice President of Sales Carsten Nørland, noting that there is much "untapped potential" in the category.

LVMH Moët Hennessy Louis Vuitton, the world’s leading luxury products group, recorded revenue of €9.1 billion in the first half of 2010, up +16%, boosted by double-digit organic revenue growth in all business units. The Selective Distribution division, which includes leading travel retailer DFS, saw a +14% upswing in first-half revenue and recorded growth of +36% in profit from recurring operations.

Following the success of its Spangle Bangle crystal range onboard Singapore Airlines, Australian jewellery supplier Toscow is setting up shop in Singapore's domestic market this month, in the prestigious Takashimaya store. The company opened its first domestic store in Hong Kong's iSquare mall in December.

UK. Leading travel retailer WDF has announced the arrival of its Pandora jewellery pop-up store in the Departures lounge of London Heathrow Terminal 5. Hawaiian Sun (confectionery) and Swarovski (miscellaneous) were among the other strong performers for the world's leading inflight retail operation.

DENMARK. Sif Jakobs Jewellery has announced a new inflight agreement with Qatar Airways, becoming the first Scandinavian jewellery brand to strike such a deal with the Doha-based carrier. Starting from July 2010, two fashionable jewellery sets will be sold onboard the prestigious five-star airline.

CHINA. Tomorrow, 3 July, is an auspicious occasion as the new 96,000sq m international terminal opens at Hangzhou Xiaoshan International Airport. The commercial offer includes two highly ambitious and upscale retail stores run by China Duty Free Group (CDFG) set in the international and domestic lounges. CDFG President Lu Lu described the company’s partnership with the airport as “a great milestone”.

The 6,942sq ft shop is the centrepiece of the newly designed airport facilities and has been re-located to sit immediately opposite the entrance into the Departures lounge. SINGAPORE. Changi Airport Group has called a major tender for seven luxury brand name boutiques at Singapore Changi Airport Terminal 1. The tender is set to be one of the biggest this year at the key Asian gateway. The vital luxury concessions are to be tendered in two clusters, one for those above 100sq m and the other for those under 100sq m. The deadline for bids is 14 July.
