Changi Airport gears up for F1 season with Grand Prix Festival

SINGAPORE. Changi Airport has kicked off the Changi Grand Prix Festival in the run-up to the 2010 Singapore Formula 1 Night Race, which will be held on 24-26 September at the Marina Bay Street Circuit. Until the end of the month, Changi Airport passengers can experience a good dose of racing action at the Departure Transit Malls of Terminals 1, 2 and 3, while airport visitors can check out various racing-themed activities at T3’s Departure Hall. In addition, the airport has launched a ‘Save 2X 7% GST on Shopping’ promotion and free shuttle bus services.

Rising spend per passenger lifts Aelia performance in first half

FRANCE/INTERNATIONAL. Aelia today reported sales of €305 million for H1 2010, up by +7% on a like-for-like basis on the same period last year. The figures were buoyed by a +8.9% rise in sales per passenger at the SDA joint venture with Aéroports de Paris, with non-EU sales per passenger up +10%. Chinese surge drives travel boom to Japan

JAPAN. Inbound visitor traffic to Japan in July broke previous records for that month, according to Travel Journal International (TJI) Online. Inbound travel rose by +38.9% year-on-year to the highest-ever monthly count of 879,100, TJI reported this week. Meanwhile outbound travel reached the highest level since 2007, largely driven by the strong Japanese Yen.

International tourist arrivals grow +7% in first-half 2010

INTERNATIONAL. The first six months of 2010 saw international tourist arrivals grow by +7%, according to the August Interim Update of the UNWTO World Tourism Barometer. This result confirms the recovery trend which began in the last quarter of 2009, and is expected to continue in the second half of the year at a somewhat more moderate rate.

International passenger volumes soar at world’s airports in July

INTERNATIONAL. Passenger traffic at the world’s airports continued to rebound in July, according to the latest figures from Airports Council International (ACI). International passenger numbers surged by +9.5% year-on-year, with total traffic growing by +6.9%, a slower rate than in previous months. Asia Pacific and Latin America-Caribbean each posted impressive growth of +14% in the month.

International passenger demand soars in July, reports IATA

International passenger demand surged by +9.2% year-on-year in July (measured in Revenue Passenger Kilometres), according to the latest figures from the International Air Transport Association (IATA). Crucially, July global passenger traffic was +3% higher than the pre-crisis levels of early 2008. IATA chief Giovanni Bisignani says: “Improving demand is an important component of the recovery. But it must translate to the bottom line."

And in very significant numbers, according to analysis of one of travel retail’s most important route networks – Japan to South Korea – by Travel Journal International (TJI) Online. May and June 2010 showed a double-digit year-on-year turnaround, thanks to stable exchange rates and improvement in the South Korean economy, TJI noted. These factors have also driven an influx of Koreans into Japan, a boon to travel retailers in locations such as Narita, Haneda and Kansai Airports.

While retail income was down -9.0% over 2009 and retail income per international passenger fell sharply, the company said this was due to a combination of one-off factors, including the change to a dual duty free retailer model.

Preliminary figures for July released today by the Association of Asia Pacific Airlines (AAPA) provide further evidence of the strength of the recovery in both passenger and freight markets, with volumes surpassing pre-recession levels. “Asia Pacific airlines are generally well placed to benefit from the improving business environment, and are making some measured additions to capacity and selective expansion of their route networks,” said AAPA Director General Andrew Herdman.

Thai airports’ concession revenues climb +10% in first nine months

Despite a difficult third quarter, Airports of Thailand (AoT) concession revenues leapt by +10.78% in the first nine months of the 2010 financial year (to the end of June), compared to the same period a year earlier, with the figure hitting Bt3.99 billion (US$126 million). The growth came against the backdrop of a +13.03% surge in total revenues at the Thai airports group in the period, and a +17.9% rise in passenger traffic.

INTERNATIONAL. Passenger traffic at the world’s airports climbed by +8% year-on-year in June, maintaining the strong momentum of recent months, Airports Council International (ACI) has reported. International passenger growth stood at a healthy +10.8% with domestic traffic growing by +6.1%. First-half results also showed robust growth, with overall traffic up by +5.9%.

Thai Airways and Tiger Airways form new low-cost airline

HONG KONG. The tobacco sector takes another blow as Hong Kong Customs & Excise spells out tough new duty free limits on tobacco for inbound travellers, effective 1 August. This follows the government’s budget, announced in February, in which Financial Secretary John Tsang revealed the measures on public health grounds. The new limits affect all travel retailers selling to Hong Kong-bound travellers, including Arrivals shops.

Significantly, this was almost +13% more than in June 2008, the group noted. Passenger growth this June was led by traffic to and from Southeast Asia, Northeast Asia, South Asia and North America. JAPAN. Narita International Airport Corporation (NAA) has unveiled its new branding as World Sky Gate Narita. The wording and logo, which will form a part of all corporate communications, aim to highlight Narita’s potential for Japan and the world. "World Sky Gate Narita is a declaration of Narita International Airport's pride and commitment as Japan's premier gateway to the world, the world's portal to Japan, and the major East Asia hub airport serving the global air transport network," said NAA.

GMR-Malaysia Airports consortium wins Malé Airport bid

MALDIVES. A consortium led by GMR Infrastructure Limited and Malaysia Airports has won the bid to manage and develop Malé International Airport under a 25-year contract. The alliance beat competition from rival consortia led by TAV Airports Holding and Aéroports de Paris, and by GVK in partnership with Zürich Airport.

ASIA PACIFIC. A new survey from MasterCard forecasts a robust surge in Asia Pacific consumer spending, aided by strong growth in the retail business, in 2010. The inaugural MasterCard Worldwide Index of Consumer Spending Capability says that improving economic fundamentals will drive spending, with double-digit rises in retail sales predicted in China, Hong Kong, India, Indonesia Korea, Malaysia and Singapore.

Malaysia Airports posts robust rise in retail revenue

MALAYSIA. Malaysia Airports Holdings has posted revenues of RM436.41 million (US$135.4 million) for the first quarter ended 31 March 2010, up by +11.89% over the same period in 2009. Revenue from the group's retail arm, Eraman Malaysia, grew by +24.71%. The news comes amid a major retail investment programme at five of the company's key airports.

Airline passenger traffic in Asia Pacific posted growth of +17.6% in volume during May, the Association of Asia Pacific Airlines (AAPA) has reported, noting the region’s robust economic upturn. “The latest set of air traffic figures confirms the underlying strength of the economic recovery, led by dynamic growth in the Asia Pacific region,” said AAPA Director General Andrew Herdman.

DFZ Capital, which trades in Malaysian travel retail under the brand name ZON Duty Free, has reported a +152% rise in net profit (after tax) to MYR23.3 million (US$7.2 million) for the financial quarter ended 31 May 2010. The company's duty free division posted revenue growth of +2.8% to MYR162.8 million (US$50.4 million).

ASIA PACIFIC. Vinexpo Asia Pacific, the region’s largest international wine and spirits exhibition, has wrapped up its 2010 exhibition with record numbers. The event welcomed 12,617 professional visitors, +42% more than in 2008. Of these, 43.5% came from Hong Kong and Macau and the other 56.5% from 24 other Asia Pacific countries. China contributed 4,136 visitors, nearly double the number that came in 2008.

Airline industry set to return to profit in 2010, says bullish IATA

The International Air Transport Association (IATA) expects airlines worldwide to post a profit of US$2.5 billion in 2010 – a major improvement compared with IATA’s previous forecast of a US$2.8 billion loss. “The top line improvement this year puts us about 75% on the way to pre-crisis levels,” says IATA Director General and CEO Giovanni Bisignani.
