FRANCE/INTERNATIONAL. Aelia today reported sales of €305 million for H1 2010, up by +7% on a like-for-like basis on the same period last year. The figures were buoyed by a +8.9% rise in sales per passenger at the SDA joint venture with Aéroports de Paris, with non-EU sales per passenger up +10%. NORTHERN IRELAND. Ryanair has announced its withdrawal from operations at Belfast City Airport from 31 October, a move that will have severe implications for the airport’s business, including commercial. The carrier accounted for around one-third of total traffic at the airport in 2009, handling 800,000 passengers. Belfast City has just concluded a £6 million upgrade of its Departures areas, including new-look WDF and HMSHost outlets.

QATAR. Qatar Airways has announced further expansion to its Indian network with a +20% increase in frequency covering the cities of Delhi, Cochin and Amritsar from next month. With a total of 14 additional flights being phased in over a period of two months, Qatar Airways’ capacity to India will increase from 74 to 88 services each week.

INTERNATIONAL. International passenger demand surged by +9.2% year-on-year in July (measured in Revenue Passenger Kilometres), according to the latest figures from the International Air Transport Association (IATA). Crucially, July global passenger traffic was +3% higher than the pre-crisis levels of early 2008. IATA chief Giovanni Bisignani says: “Improving demand is an important component of the recovery. But it must translate to the bottom line."

ASIA PACIFIC. Preliminary figures for July released today by the Association of Asia Pacific Airlines (AAPA) provide further evidence of the strength of the recovery in both passenger and freight markets, with volumes surpassing pre-recession levels. “Asia Pacific airlines are generally well placed to benefit from the improving business environment, and are making some measured additions to capacity and selective expansion of their route networks,” said AAPA Director General Andrew Herdman.

NEW ZEALAND. Japan charters to Auckland are to treble over the summer, thanks to an Air New Zealand initiative. That move was warmly welcomed today by Auckland Airport, whose General Manager Aeronautical Business Development Glenn Wedlock said: “With many carriers being forced to make tough decisions about routes, it is fantastic to see the development of capacity from Air New Zealand into Japan and the subsequent growing of Japanese passenger traffic to New Zealand.”

SINGAPORE. Changi Airport Group is adding Hainan Airlines, its sixth Chinese carrier, to its network of airlines this month. Arriving at Changi’s Terminal 2 on 29 August, Hainan Airlines will operate four weekly flights connecting Singapore to Hefei and Dalian.

SOUTH AFRICA. Tourvest Duty Free announced today the renewal of its contract to manage the inflight duty free sales of Virgin Atlantic Airways until 2014. A delighted Tourvest Duty Free Chief Executive Officer Selwyn Grimsley said: “We are looking to provide Virgin Atlantic customers with an enhanced product, offering even more choices such as a range of inflight snacks to complement those already on offer."

MEXICO. Grupo Aeroportuario del Sureste (ASUR) has posted a +16.2% year-on-year rise in total passenger traffic for July 2010. International traffic surged by +29.8% over a difficult preceding year, driven by major airport and tourism gateway Cancún which saw a +32.6% rise in international passengers to 808,312. Meanwhile the company has reacted cautiously to the financial woes of Mexicana, which has filed for bankruptcy protection in Mexico and the US.

THAILAND. Thai Airways International and Tiger Airways have announced the formation of a new low-cost airline called Thai Tiger Airways. The airline will operate the same low-fare, low-cost model as the other airlines in the Tiger Airways Group, and is expected to commence operations in the first quarter of 2011.

International passenger demand among the world’s airlines climbed by +11.9% year-on-year in June, the International Air Transport Association (IATA) has reported. “There is no indication that the recovery will stall soon,” said IATA CEO Giovanni Bisignani. “But, with government stimulus packages tailing off and restocking largely completed, we expect some slowing over the months ahead.”

International airline revenues jumped +43% to €11 billion (US$13.5 billion) in 2009, according to analysis from IdeaWorks, the airline ancillary revenues consultancy, and Amadeus, a leading travel technology partner and transaction processor. The findings show that United, American, Delta, Qantas and Ryanair were top ancillary revenue earners for 2009.

ASIA PACIFIC. June traffic figures released by the Association of Asia Pacific Airlines underline the economic recovery, the organisation said. Asia Pacific-based airlines carried 15.1 million international passengers in June, a +25.2% gain compared to the depressed volumes seen in June 2009.

QATAR. Qatar Airways again underlined its ambitions by purchasing two Bombardier Global 5000 aircraft in a US$90 million deal on the opening day of the Farnborough Air Show in UK this week. The new jets are set to join the airline’s 12-month old corporate jet subsidiary Qatar Executive, which capitalises on the growing Middle East corporate market.

Scheduled airline passenger traffic will leap by +6.4% year-on-year in 2010, with Asia Pacific taking a lead role, according to the latest report by the International Civil Aviation Organisation (ICAO). The figures, which are measured in passenger-kilometres performed (PKPs), compare to a decline of -2% in 2009.

THAILAND. DFASS (Singapore) has strengthened its growing presence in Asia with the announcement of a new inflight sales and management partnership with Bangkok Airways. SABMiller Travel Retail & Duty Free has unveiled a bespoke Grolsch bar in one of British Airways’ flagship lounges at Heathrow Airport Terminal 5, coinciding with some of the summer’s major sporting events, including the FIFA World Cup. Bar staff have been trained to serve customers the Dutch beer brand’s iconic Swingtop bottle using one of six opening techniques – Swingtop Chop, The Slice, Booty Pop, The Drop, Klik and Snatch.

Roy Luchman, a cabin crew member for Air Mauritius, has been named the overall winner of the Tourvest Annual Sales Person Awards (TASPA) hosted by Tourvest Duty Free (TDF), the inflight duty free sales business of Tourvest's Retail Merchandising Division. Along with Jacqueline Botha, cabin crew member for Interair, another Tourvest concession, he will now be entered for the ISPY Awards.

British Airways has clarified recent speculation about the fate of its inflight retail programme, currently run in-house. “We have invited a small number of suppliers to take us through what they can offer inflight retail,” the airline told The Moodie Report. “We are reviewing the information they have given us, but no decisions have been made.”

Emirates is making use of EYE’s digital media platform in Singapore Changi Airport – among other airports worldwide – to broadcast live coverage of the 2010 FIFA World Cup to travellers on the ground at Changi. UAE. Dubai-based Emirates yesterday placed a US$11.5 billion order with Airbus for an additional 32 A380 aircraft. The extraordinary deal takes the carrier’s total firm orders for the super-jumbos to 90. "Our latest commitment signals Emirates’ confidence in the growth to come in a thriving aviation sector as we build our fleet for tomorrow,” said Emirates Airline Chairman and Chief Executive His Highness (H.H.) The International Air Transport Association (IATA) expects airlines worldwide to post a profit of US$2.5 billion in 2010 – a major improvement compared with IATA’s previous forecast of a US$2.8 billion loss. “The top line improvement this year puts us about 75% on the way to pre-crisis levels,” says IATA Director General and CEO Giovanni Bisignani.
