Rising spend per passenger lifts Aelia performance in first half

FRANCE/INTERNATIONAL. Aelia today reported sales of €305 million for H1 2010, up by +7% on a like-for-like basis on the same period last year. The figures were buoyed by a +8.9% rise in sales per passenger at the SDA joint venture with Aéroports de Paris, with non-EU sales per passenger up +10%. Read on for details.

GREECE. More details have emerged about Hellenic Duty Free Shops’ first half results, released earlier this week. Hellenic said that sales (-8.9%) had not kept pace with passenger growth (+1.1%), falling particularly sharply in April (volcano cloud) and June. Confectionery, up +4.0%, resisted the negative trend.

GREECE. Hellenic Duty Free Shops (HDFS) today unveiled a +9.7% rise in pre-tax profits to €21.6 million for its travel retail operations for the first half of 2010. This was despite a -8.9% drop in sales to €93 million. HDFS General Director George Velentzas said: “The parent HDFS [i.e. the travel retail operations –Ed]… significantly increased its profitability despite the increase in sales, still remaining the most profitable company in the travel retail industry.”

INTERNATIONAL. Dufry Group plans to open close to 20,000sq m of new retail space in 2010, covering 152 stores, CEO Julián Díaz told analysts after Thursday’s half-year results announcement. More than half of the stores will open in Q3 and Q4, with a strong contribution from Dufry’s Hudson acquisition. Díaz also reiterated the retailer’s desire to expand in emerging markets, with Russia, China and India of particular interest.

Canadian airport duty free sales climb in first half

CANADA. Airport duty free sales in Canada climbed by +12% year-on-year to C$96 million (US$92.7 million) in the first six months of 2010, according to figures from the Canadian Border Services Agency, reported by the Frontier Duty Free Association (FDFA). Land border sales fell marginally (-0.5%) to C$56.8 million (US$54.8 million) in the same period. Both channels showed good sales growth in June.

SOUTH KOREA. Having completed the acquisition of fellow Korean travel retailer AK Duty Free late last month, Lotte Duty Free is eyeing further growth opportunities. “We finished the AK acquisition after many obstacles and we changed to the Lotte name in three shops at Incheon International [perfumes & cosmetics], Gimpo and Coex,” Lotte Duty Free President YS Choi told The Moodie Report. Hong Kong Customs invokes tobacco limits for inbound travellers

HONG KONG. The tobacco sector takes another blow as Hong Kong Customs & Excise spells out tough new duty free limits on tobacco for inbound travellers, effective 1 August. This follows the government’s budget, announced in February, in which Financial Secretary John Tsang revealed the measures on public health grounds. The new limits affect all travel retailers selling to Hong Kong-bound travellers, including Arrivals shops.

B&S Paul Global unveils new-look military duty free store

Leading travel retailer and wholesaler B&S Paul Global has unveiled a radically expanded and enhanced duty free store serving NATO staff at the Allied Joint Force Command base at Brunssum in the Netherlands. Hershey's celebrates its first travel retail boutique

US/PHILIPPINES. US confectionery giant Hershey’s has opened its first boutique in travel retail, in Duty Free Philippines' Fiesta Mall. The 30sq m boutique, opened with Eastern Duty Free, features a huge range of products, from travel retail exclusive packs to the Eastern Duty Free-exclusive Pasalubong gift bags.

Diageo ‘Summer Spirit’ campaign set to drive footfall and sales

Diageo Global Travel & Middle East (GTME) has launched its global summer campaign, named ‘Take Your Summer Spirit With You’, which aims to increase footfall and sales in global travel retail. The campaign will run across the group’s core portfolio, and with key retail partners at airports, cruise ships and border stores.

Hellenic Duty Free Shops structure streamlined in share transfer

GREECE. The boards of Folli Follie, Hellenic Duty Free Shops and Elmec Sport – all part of the wider Folli Follie Group – have moved to streamline the structure of the company through a transfer of shares between each. Currently, Folli Follie owns 56.78% of Hellenic Duty Free Shops, while Hellenic in turn owns 95.6% of Elmec Sport.

Canadian airport duty free sales surge in May

CANADA. Canadian airport duty free sales surged by +18% year-on-year in May to C$14 million (US$13.5 million), while land border sales dropped by -3% to C$11.7 million (US$11.3 million) in the month. That’s according to Canadian Border Services Agency figures released by the FDFA. Airport sales have climbed by +10% in the year to date, with land border sales down -1.9%.

Grupo Vierci to launch ambitious duty free venture in Chile

CHILE. Grupo Vierci, a leading South American retail-to-media company, is set to open what it says is Chile’s largest duty free store, the Mega Shopping outlet in the Iquique Free Zone. The 1,218sq m store – due open in September – will be located in Mall Zofri, the retail heart of South America’s largest tax free zone.
