UAE. A powerful new initiative between Diageo GTME, Dubai Duty Free and Dubai Airports Company – creating the first ever alcohol sampling event at the regional hub – has taken ‘Trinity’ cooperation to a new level, says the brand owner. The ‘Mentorship Experience’ provides the shopper with a tailored, private, one-to-one tutorial of Diageo’s portfolio of luxury brands, beginning at Dubai International Airport with Johnnie Walker Double Black, and delivering what the partners call “an unprecedented shopper experience”. US.Denver International Airport has unveiled plans for its South Terminal Redevelopment Programme. The US$900 million project, which includes a hotel, conference centre, downtown rail link, signature rail bridge and plaza, is scheduled for completion in 2016. Click on the image to view.
UK. Puig Travel Retail and WDF have aunched the world’s first Paco Rabanne cross-category pop-up shop at Heathrow Airport T3. The store will open for an initial three months, coinciding with the summer season. The 32sq m Paco Rabanne ‘universe’ houses fragrances, watches and sunglasses from the brand’s portfolio. WDF Commercial Director Jo O’Connor hails the project, saying it has delivered “great theatre”. Click on the image to view.
NETHERLANDS. Amsterdam Airport Schiphol is celebrating the FIFA World Cup, and the Dutch team's triumphant run through to the final, with a host of soccer-themed events. The Dutch operator has even placed its own specially designed football stadium in front of the airport entrance, seating 325 people. UK. Following the completion by BAA of its new security area at Edinburgh Airport, WDF has officially launched its World Duty Free store. The 6,942sq ft shop is the centrepiece of the newly designed airport facilities and has been re-located to sit immediately opposite the entrance into the Departures lounge. AUSTRALIA. In this edition of The Moodie View we celebrated the expansion and upgrade of Sydney Airport's International Terminal departures level. Sydney Airport CEO Russell Balding said: “It is a strategically important investment that will leave visitors with a positive and lasting impression of Sydney.” The revamped terminal includes one of the airport world’s most ambitious retail and food & beverage offers. CYPRUS. Travel retailer CTC-ARI Airports reports encouraging success for its new in-store promotion at Larnaka International Airport, which celebrates the FIFA Football World Cup. The campaign puts consumers' footballing skills to the test in an innovative way of driving footfall, penetration and spend. The Moodie View was on location in Larnaka and, in a unique filmed experiment, put the sporting prowess of CTC-ARI Airports Head of Retail & Marketing Martin Mullen under the microscope. CYPRUS. Commercial sales at the new Larnaka International Airport have begun encouragingly, despite soft British traffic and spend and recent disruption from the Icelandic volcano ash crisis. May retail sales have boomed, driven by a much-enhanced spend per head. That in turn is being driven by non-core categories that were enhanced or added at the new terminal when it opened last November. Click on the image to view.

UK. Stena Line has launched the first of two Superferries – described as the largest of their type in the world – on the North Sea route between Harwich and the Hook of Holland. The Stena Hollandica, which was launched on Sunday, and the Stena Britannica, which goes into service in the autumn, were built at a cost of over £375 million. Click on the image to view.

Sunglass Hut, the leading global sunglass retailer owned by Luxottica Group, celebrated the opening of its London and New York flagship stores last week with a star-studded roster of celebrities. UK. WDF today celebrated the official opening of its new airside World Duty Free store at George Best Belfast City Airport. The 2,126sq ft store features brands that are new to the location including Guerlain, Versace, Hermès, Chloe and Cartier, plus an extensive liquor zone majoring on Irish whiskey. US. Diageo Global Travel & Middle East (GTME) has unveiled a new “experiential” travel retail campaign for Tanqueray gin at New York JFK Airport Terminal 4. Citing ‘Trinity’ principles, Diageo GTME has developed the promotion in association with DFS, JFK International Air Terminal, and food & beverage concessionaire SSP. HAITI. Following a highly successful visit to Haiti by Hand in Hand for Haiti founding Steering Committee Members Ed Brennan, Olivier Bottrie and Martin Moodie earlier this month, the travel retail industry’s effort to help the reconstruction of the earthquake-ravaged country has gained tremendous momentum. AFRICA. ‘Chasing Rainbows,’ the single performed by rock group Sound Driver recently at the summit of Mount Kilimanjaro, is now available for download, via iTunes, with proceeds going to leading cleft charity The Smile Train. US. The decision by the International Association of Airport Duty Free Stores (IAADFS) to switch its annual Duty Free Show of the Americas to Orlando paid rich dividends, according to IAADFS Executive Director Michael Payne. Reflecting on the event, which concluded yesterday, Payne said: “The reaction from all the exhibitors I have talked with and other attendees was that they were thrilled to have come back to Orlando… in a facility where everyone is under one roof.” Click on the image to view.

A major travel retail industry initiative to assist the reconstruction of Haiti following the catastrophic earthquake of 12 January has been launched with seed funding of nearly US$400,000. ‘Hand in Hand for Haiti’ has been launched in a collaboration between DFS Group, The Estée Lauder Companies and The Moodie Report but is reaching out to all players in the global travel retail and related airports and aviation sectors. UK.Leading travel retailer World Duty Free has revealed that 48 bottles of Aberfeldy Single Cask Single Malt Scotch whisky were sold through two WDF airport stores in December. GERMANY.The Dutch developer of self-service shopping concepts will introduce ‘The Shopping Wall’ to Gebr Heinemann at Frankfurt Airport in January. SINGAPORE.Diageo Global Travel & Middle East has reported spectacular success for its high-profile Johnnie Walker Formula 1 promotion at Changi Airport, which concluded recently. SINGAPORE.Diageo recently unveiled the first bottle of The John Walker, its new ultra-premium, US$3,000 blended Scotch whisky from the Johnnie Walker Blue Label family, in association with DFS at Singapore Changi Airport. The first of only five bottles being made available before the official September launch, it is being auctioned for charity, with all proceeds (matched by DFS) going to The Smile Train. CHINA. "A new chapter for China Duty Free Group." Those were the words of China Duty Free Group Vice President Ms Feng Zhao at the group's annual business partners' dinner during the TFWA Asia Pacific show. There, China's leading travel retail company unveiled the biggest retail development in its history – the building of two major downtown stores on the holiday island of Hainan. INDIA. Dubbed 'a real-world fairytale', an acclaimed documentary covering the work of the world’s leading cleft charity, The Smile Train, has been nominated for an Oscar at the glamour event of the international film industry in Hollywood. The news will hearten many in the travel retail industry – the sector has raised close to US$1 million for the charity over the past two years. SWEDEN. Pernod Ricard-owned Absolut Vodka has introduced an in-store installation at Stockholm Arlanda Airport, the main hub of the Swedish brand's homeland. The Absolut Arch is situated in The Nuance Group's new duty free flagship store in the airport, where it commands a striking presence and frames the display area for the white spirits category. UK. Anthony Fung of Dragonair received the major accolade of the evening at the annual Inflight Sales Person of the Year (ISPY) awards in London, organised by Travel Retail Training (TRT). The evening was particularly noteworthy however for a brave and dignified speech by Ray Martin, co-owner of TRT, who has been battling cancer since September. Click on the image to view.
UAE. Dubai Duty Free celebrated its 25th anniversary at a glittering Gala Dinner on Thursday night, attended by H.H. Sheikh Ahmed bin Saeed Al Maktoum, President of the Dubai Department of Civil Aviation Authority and Chairman of Dubai Airports. Eight of the ten-strong management team who started the business on 20 December 1983 were among the 500-plus audience. Leading hair styling brand ghd has further demonstrated its commitment to the travel retail channel by bringing its innovative “Style Lounge” concept to Birmingham International Airport, in conjunction with Alpha Group. The three day promotional event, which is located airside just outside the main Alpha tax and duty free store in terminal one began on 17 December and The Moodie View was there to enjoy a mini make-over. SWEDEN. The Nuance Group recently unveiled a new 1,680sq m flagship store at Stockholm-Arlanda Airport Terminal 5, the largest store in the group’s portfolio and certainly one of its most impressive. The new walk-through Tax Free Store has been developed in close cooperation with airport partner Arlanda Schiphol Development Company (ASDC). It is located directly after the new central security area at T5, with some 60% of all passengers travelling from T5 passing through the shop on their way to the gates. UK. It was a bonny Scottish day at Glasgow Airport as BAA Glasgow unveiled the latest phase of its £31 million terminal extension. A new central search facility means that all passengers, international and domestic, are now channelled through a new, walkthrough store that concessionaire World Duty Free described as “a state-of-the art shopping experience”. The 4,000sq m development, which was opened by Scotland’s First Minister Alex Salmond, also includes a new ground floor UK arrivals hall, more space to relax, and further new shops, bars and restaurants. DUBAI. They ran, they walked, they crawled. One very festive character even waddled. We're talking Miles for Smiles, the 5k and 10k run held in Dubai on 22 November which raised well over US$200,000 for the world's leading cleft charity, The Smile Train. The big 10k race was won by Olivier Bottrie, Estée Lauder Companies President, Travel Retailing – Worldwide, in a superb 44 minutes and seven seconds. CHINA. “In a short period of nine months we have changed the travel retail face of China”. That’s the ebullient claim of Global Retail Services, which, through its Chinese operation Global & Beijing International Co (GABICO), has created an impressive new offer at Beijing Capital International Airport’s Terminal 3 domestic area. Working in partnership with airport company Beijing Capital Airport Commercial & Trading Company, GABICO believes it has the offer in place to appeal to a large number of the legion of domestic travellers who will use the new airport this year.
NETHERLANDS. Airport operator Schiphol Group has launched a quirky and innovative television and web advertising campaign to promote its famous 'See Buy Fly' shopping brand. The multimedia campaign is a delightfully simple marketing visual – modelling the airport’s runway using duty free products available in Schiphol’s many outlets – and one which works nicely. RUSSIA. In this episode we visit Moscow Sheremetyveo Airport and the opening of the spectacular new RegStaer duty free store in Terminal C. Using a simple Canon Cybershot camera The Moodie Report Publisher Martin Moodie took this impromptu video of the new store to capture its unique nautical theming - the facade of the shop is designed like a luxury yacht. The store is ideally located near to the VIP area and the First and Business Class lounges. RegStaer's product mix, especially in spirits, reflects that influence on the passenger mix. UK. Airport operator BAA has launched a new advertising campaign entitled ‘To fly for’ which showcases the diverse range of services, shops, bars and restaurants at its UK airports. The multimedia campaign, which is being supported across TV, radio, outdoor advertising, press and on-airport platforms across the UK, is part of BAA’s ongoing programme to highlight its commitment to improving passenger experience at its airports.
